Sports: Is It All B.S.?
Sports: Is It All B.S.? By Michael Yessis
Price: $13.95

This book, by Dr. Michael Yessis, is a great read for everyone interested in sports and a must read for anyone who has an athlete in the family, especially if the athlete would like to develop his or her full potential. The information appeals to not only people who are interested in sports, but to the nation as a whole. It has ramifications regarding our participation in World and Olympic Games. For a nation that has more money spent on sports, more coaches, more and better equipment and facilities and more athletes than any other nation, this is a deplorable state of affairs. Even a small country such as Greece can beat our best professional basketball players. Ask yourself why Cuba can beat our best professional baseball players, our most popular national game. Sports: Is It All B.S.?, is an expose of the many myths and false information that have surrounded sports in the U.S. for many decades. One reason for the sheer amount of misinformation is that we, as a nation, do not have a scientifically-based training system, nor do we have universities or schools that specialize in development of coaches and athletes. This is why we have to travel the world over to find the best athletes for our collegiate and professional teams. There are many examples given in the book, as for example, "Great athletes are born, not made". If this were true why do we find the best athletes putting in the greatest amount of practice time? Another is "Its all in the genes". For most athletes genes are basically the same. They only play a major role on the extremes of speed and endurance, not for team athletes. Not only are there many general myths (examples of b.s.) presented but also chapters deveoted to specific sports. For example in baseball, the belief that "Youngsters should not throw a curveball" is a myth. The reasons why the examples given are myths, really b.s., are fully explained. With so much b.s. floating around, it is often easier to believe the myths rather than facts. The book shows you how you can cut through the b.s. to achieve better results on and off the field and truly develop athletic potential
